Authentic Igloo Tags

Authentic Igloo Tags guarantee that the artwork is handcrafted by the Inuit people of Canada's Arctic.

The Government of Canada's Igloo Tag distinguishes original Inuit art from imitations.  The tag is given to Inuit-made sculptures only -- and appears only in art galleries.  Imitations began to emerge in the early 1950s, shortly after Inuit art became established on the market. (At that time, the term "Eskimo" was still acceptable, therefore, "Eskimo Art" appears on the tag.  Today, Inuit has replaced the term Eskimo to describe the people of the Canadian Arctic.)  The mass-produced imitations are made of plastic, ceramic or "cast stone," and often carry a lower price.  The Igloo Tag establishes the authenticity of the work. It does not indicate artistic merit.  All artwork sold on arcticinuksuk.com includes an "Igloo Tag" issued by the Government Of Canada certifying its authenticity as true Inuit Art.
